hydro think tank-The Northeast
May 20-23 HyDro Think Tank at the GE technical resource center
The Hydro Think Tank brings together bright new workforce entrants to solve real world problems with a partner utility. The week-long research and educational forum addresses the needs of the hydropower industry by introducing a specific hydropower issue to have student solve.
This seminar is designed to help develop a sense of an engineer's business by working within a team environment while trying to solve a real-world problem. Developed to mirror Shark Tank, student teams from several university programs will be invited to participate in a problem-solving forum to develop and propose a solution to a plant problem.
Students from top universities bring their talent, ingenuity and cutting edge-technology, to see if they have what it takes to win the Hydro Think Tank. University Teams from University of Buffalo, Stony Brook University, University of Albany, Clarkson University, Cornell, RPI, SUNY Polytechnic, City College of New York (CUNY), Manhattan College and University of Binghamton will be brought in for an intense week of hands on problem solving to give their best solutions to pressing hydropower issues. The week is filled with exploration, training, team work, meeting top researchers in the industry and senior level management for career development to compete for the grand prize of an opportunity for an internship, and university credits.
When: Monday, May 20th through Thursday, May 23rd, 2019.
Where: The General Electric Global Resource Center, 1 Research Cir Niskayuna, NY 12309.
Who: University teams are being invited to participate in this highly-visible and intense opportunity designed to complement other engineering coursework.
Why: General Electric, Brookfield Renewable, New York Power Authority and the Hydro Research Foundation believe that through education and hands-on experience, real world problems can be tackled by the next generation of leaders.
The Incentive: A winning team will walk away with an amazing opportunity! Each participant will receive an incredible resume booster, receive university credit (if available), and have the potential for an internship with one of the organizations, the opportunity to compete for a cash prize and a hands-on experience like no other.
Do you have what it takes?
A qualifying team will be made up of 6 undergraduate/graduate students. Each individual member has unique skills, perspectives, and ideas. Students should have experience/coursework related to power generation with hydropower being a plus, engineering, finance, energy management, Engineering/Science - Finance students who are interested in energy markets and controls. To work together, bringing out the best in each member will be key in winning the competition.
Teams will be judged by a panel of Executives, Managers and Foundation members on ingenuity, practicality of solution, and presentation.
This is the opportunity to practice real-life business and engineering skills, hone individual talents and apply knowledge to solve a pressing need in our river systems.
