The Original Renewable Energy is Creating Jobs!
The hydropower industry employs over 300,000 workers. With an expanding fleet of hydropower and a retiring workforce, now is the time to join the industry. Hydropower continues to grow and an estimated 700,000 jobs will be created by 2025.  This industry is stable, pays well, and provides benefits that are hard to beat.  For more information on jobs in hydro check out National Hydropower Association's website, and the Resources tab.

Students that are interested in attending should be excited to get a job or internship and have taken coursework related to energy, all things electrical, mechanical, operations, controls, hydropower, thermal cycles and heat transfer, circuit analysis, cyber security, welding, metallurgy and control systems.

Students will be asked to share a cover letter for why they are interested in hydropower, a resume and transcript.  In January, selected students will be invited to attend the event

Scholarships:

The Foundation anticipates continuing to make scholarship awards to top students based on their advisor’s recommendation.  In January, the Foundation will reach out to the program advisor for students and solicit applications for awards.

Hiring for Hydro brings together over 80 students from over 14 colleges in the Northeast to participate in an educational workshop about careers in hydropower to be followed by a special recruiting session. This event was established to address the hiring needs of the industry, build academic interest at the college level, and create a strong conduit between industry and regional schools.

The National Hydropower Association hosts students at an awards luncheon where four students involved in Hiring for Hydro will receive merit awards.

In the afternoon, students will meet with recruiters, share their resumes, hear about job opportunities, and in some cases, schedule calls or interviews. Ruth Erwert from Chelan County PUD shared, “This is a great event. It has been well coordinated with top talent seeking careers in hydro.  In this competitive market for engineers and other utility-specific positions, Hiring for Hydro has a marked advantage in recruiting for our company.” The foundation looks forward to continuing this vibrant new program in future years and is pleased to see the strong support from academia and the hydropower industry.

What People are Saying:

The event was very much quality over quantity – which we appreciate.  We felt like we truly were able to have conversations with students that were interested in working with us and were familiar with the industry.  The fact that we didn’t feel like a random vendor and were treated far more like a preferred guest was great.” –Jaclyn McCall, Idaho Power

“I very much appreciate the opportunity you all gave me at the HRF, it allowed me to get a job I would have not thought possible a couple years ago.”
-Kevin Mulligan, HRF Alumnus

“The Hydro Research Foundation has been at the forefront of finding, fostering and guiding a new generation of hydropower talent. After just five years, HRF has placed 75% of its students into jobs within the industry. Thanks to HRF, these young individuals will undoubtedly spur new technological development – from new turbine applications and designs to enhanced operational regimes. HRF’s is helping to ensure that millions of American’s will continue to have access to clean, affordable and reliable hydropower for another century.”
-Linda Church-Ciocci, Executive Director, National Hydropower Association

“Combining the Foundation's scholarship contributions along with the Corps hands-on industry opportunities creates a partnership that will likely be second-to-none in developing and preparing outstanding men and women capable of embracing the challenges in the hydropower industry for years to come.”
–John Etzel, Past Deputy Director of the Hydroelectric Design Center, U.S. Army, Corps of Engineers
