About the Fellowship Program
The Hydropower Foundation, Inc. (Foundation) led the Hydro Fellowship Program that was designed to stimulate new student research and academic interest in research and careers in conventional or pumped storage hydropower. The Fellowships were designed to allow outstanding early-career researchers to facilitate research related to hydropower. Research undertaken by the Foundation and its Fellows sought to advance knowledge about hydroelectric technology, including efficiency improvements and environmental mitigation. Through this program the Foundation promoted educational opportunities and information development related to hydropower.
The Foundation awarded 43 fellowships to masters and doctoral degree students throughout the United States. Students from 23 universities in 18 states were awarded fellowships between 2010-2013. Fellows were selected based on research vision, innovation, academic performance, potential for leadership and overall strength of their research proposal. Each fellowship award was approximately $55,000-$141,000 over the one to three year period of study and included a tuition allowance, living stipend, professorial honorarium, and participation in the annual Hydro Fellows Roundtables. The Fellowships were made possible by a grant from the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Program of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
